New Cercis Canadensis Varieties Promise Vibrant Gardens
Garden enthusiasts and landscape designers are in for a visual treat with the introduction of new Cercis canadensis (Eastern Redbud) varieties, showcasing remarkable colors and growth characteristics that promise to enhance any garden setting. They do remarkably well throughout CA.
One of the standout introductions for 2024 is the Hearts A’Fire™ redbud.
This variety bursts into the scene with dark pink flowers in spring, followed by an array of heart-shaped leaves that transform from burgundy-red to tangerine and gold, providing a fiery display of color throughout the growing season.
This tree not only adds a splash of color but also maintains a manageable size of 10-15 feet in height and spread, making it ideal for smaller gardens or as a focal point in larger landscapes.
Another exciting introduction is the Midnight Express® redbud, known for its rich burgundy foliage that retains its vibrant color throughout the growing season.
It offers an impressive height and spread of up to 30 feet, making it a dramatic addition to any landscape.
Its pink pea-shaped blooms are typical of redbuds, but its foliage adds a unique aesthetic value that is both native and adaptable to various garden settings
Rising Sun™ on the other hand, is lauded for its heart-shaped leaves that transition through shades of orange, gold, and finally green.
This variety offers a smaller stature, typically growing to about 12 feet high, which makes it ideal for smaller gardens or residential landscapes.
The Rising Sun™ is particularly noted for its vibrant and colorful foliage that begins in spring and extends well into the fall, providing extended seasonal interest.
Flame Thrower® Redbud emerges as a truly spectacular variety, combining aesthetic appeal with easy care.
It dazzles with light-pink spring flowers, followed by an ever-changing palette of foliage colors from burgundy to yellow, and finally to green, maintaining this multicolor display throughout the season.
Not only does it provide a stunning visual impact, but it also adapts well to a variety of soil types, although it thrives best in moist, well-draining soil.
Mature trees reach about 15 to 20 feet in height and spread, making them a perfect choice for those looking for a mid-sized tree with long-lasting appeal.
These new varieties of Cercis canadensis not only promise to elevate garden aesthetics but also offer low maintenance and adaptability, making them prized additions for both novice gardeners and seasoned landscapers.
As these trees flourish across varying hardiness zones, they continue to captivate with their enduring beauty and ecological benefits.
