August Gardening: How to Plant and Divide Bearded Irises for Vibrant Spring Blooms
August is the ideal time to plant or divide bearded irises, ensuring they have enough time to establish strong roots before the cooler months arrive.
Bearded irises are hardy perennials that thrive in well-drained soil and full sunlight, making them a stunning addition to any garden with their striking blooms and vibrant colors.
Dividing irises helps rejuvenate older clumps, encouraging healthier growth and more abundant flowering in the coming seasons.
If a patch has become overcrowded or stopped blooming well, it’s a sign the plants need dividing, typically every three to four years.
To start, carefully dig around the clump of irises with a garden fork or spade, lifting the rhizomes from the soil.
Gently shake off excess dirt and examine the rhizomes for signs of health – discard any that appear soft, rotten, or damaged.
Using a sharp, clean knife, cut the rhizomes into sections, making sure each new piece has at least one fan of leaves and a healthy root system attached.
Once divided, trim the leaves to about six inches in length, which helps the plant focus its energy on root development rather than supporting excessive foliage.
When replanting the iris divisions, prepare a new location or amend the existing soil to improve drainage if necessary.
Create a shallow hole for each rhizome, ensuring that the top of the rhizome is just barely exposed to the surface or lightly covered with soil.
Bearded irises dislike being buried too deeply, which can lead to rot.
Space the rhizomes 12 to 24 inches apart to give them room to grow and spread over time.
Water the newly planted irises well, helping them settle into their new environment.
However, avoid overwatering, as they prefer slightly dry conditions once established.
With proper care, your newly planted or divided bearded irises will reward you with beautiful blooms next spring and continue to flourish for years to come.
